Across Europe, the probability of receiving a timely cancer diagnosis and surviving the disease differs considerably due to inequalities in preventive policies, access to state-of-the art diagnostics, treatments and care. Therefore, the usage of tele-medicine in healthcare has now, more than ever, been acknowledged as important in responding to epidemic situations, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The exchange of best practices on the use of digital tools (such as online consultations and real-time clinical data exchange) could provide assistance to to patients, especially the ones living in remote and rural areas during cross-border emergencies and health crises. This Joint Action (JA) called ‘Strengthening e-Health including tele-medicine and remote monitoring for health care systems for CANcer prevention and care (eCAN)’ aims to bring the benefits of e-Health to all citizens and patients across EU-Member States, focusing on cancer prevention and care. There is a need to harmonize tele-medicine regulations and to explore the efficacy of tele-consultation programs and tele-monitoring in the cancer field. eCAN explores their role in two clinical trials, focusing on tele-rehabilitation and tele-psychological support in different populations of cancer patients in 10 European countries. Patient Reported Outcomes and Experiences shall be monitored by dedicated tele-monitoring systems, and a secure platform will provide dashboards for decision support enabling future Artificial Intelligence applications. eCAN's outputs will: i) facilitate the development of modular/ interoperable solutions that build on regional/ national infrastructures, and ii) inform tele-medicine services with a strong focus on users (patient and health care providers). Lessons learned from the deployment of the interventions will inform mutual learning and knowledge exchange for better health system resilience and preparedness.
